The past year has witnessed an increasing number of men choosing to receive both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, up by nearly 30 percent since 2000, according to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Adam C. Augenstein, MD explains that increased initiative in maintaining and improving physical appearance, having a competitive edge in the job market, and re-entering the world of dating later in life has had quite an impact in the cosmetic market for men.
The latest advances in techniques and tools used by plastic surgeons today heighten the appeal of cosmetic procedures for men, as they tend to be quick and efficient with little to no downtime required after. Further customization of treatment plans to suit each patient’s needs makes such procedures much more accessible.
In its yearly data collection, ASPS noted the five most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries for men in 2016 included:
- Eyelid surgery
- Breast reduction for gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts)
Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic (often referred to as “brotox”) and dermal fillers are also popular with men who want a fresher-faced and more alert appearance with little fuss or work on their part. Such nonsurgical procedures offer the convenience of being quick with minimal downtime or side effects.
While both men and women can receive any of the procedures mentioned above, the specifics of each must be tailored to preserve or enhance their gender identity and unique features. Dr. Augenstein would be happy to advise anyone looking to learn more about cosmetic procedures for men.
